The government has done many things to decrease poverty in the US. Communities have made homeless shelters which provide food, water, and a place to sleep because the people who are in poverty don't have the money to get themselves a house and food for their families. Homeless shelters are great because they help the community and provide a place for people to live. One example of a homeless shelter in Bloomington Illinois is called the Salvation Army Safe Harbor. That shelter helped to reduce poverty tremendously. There are homeless shelters all around the U.S. as well, but the Salvation Army Safe Harbor helps the Bloomington Community to be a better place.
Another example of the government helping is all of the U.S. welfare programs that are available to people living in poverty. One of them is the child nutrition program. This program helps kids who can’t get food at home. The school provides them with breakfast and lunch. Another welfare program for kids in low income families is called Head Start. Head Start gives young kids an opportunity to go to preschool to get a “head start” in their lives.
